Beyond Time: Antonia Eiriz, Juan Sánchez, and Pedro Vizcaino

What does it mean to be a conscious being not fully tethered to time and place? The works presented in this exhibition feature human and human-like forms that may exist beyond a specific place, a particular time, and a tangible realm. Artists Antonia Eiriz, Juan Sánchez, and Pedro Vizcaino contemplate alternative states of being in their art practices.

These three artists, despite their distinct visual languages, consider the complex political realities of their moment. Antonia Eiriz created work before and after the 1959 revolution in Cuba, receiving criticism from the government for her work and later living in exile in Miami. Juan Sánchez, born and raised in New York to Puerto Rican parents, played a pivotal role in advancing Puerto Rican art in the United States. Pedro Vizcaino, based in Miami since 1993, was a member of Arte Calle, an influential street art group in Havana active in the 1980s.

Their art and its message, however, extends beyond any particular realm. Eiriz’s work relates a specific experience in Cuba with expressive figures that exist out of time and resonate as gestures of survival and resilience in any context. Juan Sánchez’s collages function as a fertile ground where memory, history, and identity collapse onto a single plane. The assemblages by Pedro Vizcaino urge viewers to consider alternate realities through a deeper awareness of the present moment.

Beyond Time examines how the selected paintings, works on paper, and assemblages speak to the human condition, using expressive gestures and evocative constructions to conflate time, identity, and culture.
