Not exactly painting, nor exactly sculpture, the art of Robert Thiele squeezes into the cusp between the two means of expression. A quiet intensity has marked Thiele's artwork since he first arrived in Miami in 1966, ditching his football career to become an art instructor at Miami-Dade College, where he affected generations of artists who speak strongly of his influence on them. An artist as well as a teacher, he has built up an impressive oeuvre.
Thiele began exhibiting publicly in the early 1970s and he participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Biennial Exhibition in 1975. His numerous solo exhibitions include several in public institutions, including the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1988 and the Miami Art Museum in 2001.
This exhibition is curated by Tyler Emerson-Dorsch.
