MOAD Talks with Dr. Mauricio Castro

Join us for an evening of reflection and learning. Dr. Mauricio Castro of Centre College will share invaluable information about the Cuban Refugee Program and its relationship to the history of the Freedom Tower. Castro is the author of Only a Few Blocks to Cuba: Cold War Refugee Policy, the Cuban Diaspora, and the Transformations of Miami by Mauricio Fernando Castro, published in 2024 by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Mauricio Castro is the Marlene & David Grissom Associate Professor of History and chair of Latin American studies at Centre College. He holds a PhD in history from Purdue University and he specializes in the intersection of political, urban, and immigration history. His book Only A Few Blocks to Cuba: Cold War Refugee Policy, the Cuban Diaspora, and the Transformations of Miami shows how the U.S. government came to view Cuban migration to Miami as a strategic asset during the Cold War, in the process investing heavily in the city's development and significantly impacting national politics and was released in March 2024 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. His writing has also appeared in The History Teacher, Buildings & Landscapes, the Washington Post, and Time.

Event attendees may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.
